2017 Chevrolet Impala SS Review

Chevrolet is currently selling two completely different cars in the same class, the Impala, a full size sedan, as well as the SS which is there as the high performance version. However, the latter doesn’t have nothing in common with the Impala and it is in fact an Australian design. Not too long ago they did say that they plan on releasing a model which would replace the aging SS. This new car would be the 2017 Chevrolet Impala SS which this time around would share its chassis with the actual Impala, all while having better performance levels than the car it is replacing at a lower price point.

Impala SS 2017 Engine

The engine of the new SS Impala will likely be the same unit powering the current ATS-V, a 3.6 liter twin-turbocharged V6 good for up to 420 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. While the engine could be capable of a lot more than that, GM will likely limit its power in order to keep the transmission system safe.

The gearbox should be a new 9 speed automatic instead of the usual 6 speed unit and thanks to the all wheel drive system, the car will likely accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in less than 5 seconds, all while having a maximum top speed of more than 150 MPH.

2017 Chevrolet Impala SS Exterior

In terms of looks, the Impala SS will be revised in order to look just as aggressive as its engine. In order to do this, the car will likely get an all new body-kit which could include new bumpers, a small splitter in the front as well as a subtle diffuser in the back, a quad-exhaust system which could get valves in order to make it sound more aggressive as well as unique colors.

A spoiler is unlikely to be installed from the factory, mostly because they want the car to be a subtle high performance cruiser and not an all out super-sedan. As standard it will feature Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, LED tail lights as well as a back-lit front badge.

2017 Chevy Impala SS Interior

The interior of the 2017 Chevrolet Impala SS will be similar to that of the current model but there are going to be a few differences. Firstly, the car will be similarly equipped to a mid-range model in order to keep the price down.

However, despite that, it will feature sporty leather seats and a rear leather bench as standard in order to keep its passengers secure. Options will include a bigger than usual navigation and infotainment system, unique stitching on the seats and steering wheel as well as SS badges throughout the interior.

2017 Chevrolet Impala SS Price

So far it seems that GM will sell this model for around $50,000, price at which it would compete with the Charger SRT8 as well as the Chrysler 300 SRT8. Both of these two cars are more powerful and feature rear wheel drive as standard which is actually better than the front wheel drive platform of the Impala.

In order to make it competitive, GM will give the car a standard all wheel drive system which this time may feature torque vectoring. This would not only make it better to drive than its competitors but also safer due to the added grip of the four wheel drive system. The drawback is that it will become heavier and less efficient but GM will likely remedy all of that.

How? Well, the 2017 Chevrolet Impala SS will most definitely get a revised suspension system with lower springs and sport shocks as well as a bigger brake package. On top of that, the usual 20 inch rims will be replaced with 19 inch lightweight ones in order to make the car as fast as possible.
