The only super-car Audi currently makes is the R8 which is not the fastest or even the prettiest but it is one of the most usable super-cars in the World and thanks to that it sold better than most. In order to expand their roster of cars and also build something special, the German manufacturer is going to release in the next couple of years the 2017 Audi R10 which will be built from scratch in order to take head on the most expensive cars in the World. Unlike the R8, the R10 will share its name with the Le Mans winning R10 TDI which has been released back in 2005.
2017 Audi R10 Platform
The new R10 will be built from ground up and unlike most of their other models, it will get its own unique platform which may be used at a later date on a new R8 or even on an upcoming Lamborghini. This platform will be made out of carbon fiber and only its suspension components will be made out of aluminum. Despite all of these, the total weight of the car will likely hover around 3,500 pounds which is a bit much for a car built entirely out of carbon fiber.
Under the hood of the new Audi R10
Under its hood we are going to find one of the most bizarre engines in the World and certainly one of the most intriguing, especially on a hyper-car. The 2017 Audi R10 is planned to receive a diesel-hybrid powertrain which will make it the most special car in the World. However, this is not the first time Audi puts a silly powerful diesel in a car. They did it quite a few years ago with the V12 TDI Q7. The main advantage of the diesel is the massive torque and the low fuel consumption, especially for a hyper car, but it would be heavy and not that responsive.
The R10 will likely get a 4.8 to 5.5 liter V10 with four turbochargers which is expected to develop up to 600 horsepower and more than 1000 lb-ft of torque all by itself. Because it is a diesel and the acceleration is never that great with such an engine, Audi will also install a pair of electric motors on the front axle which will up the output of the car to more than 800 horsepower. This should allow it to get to 60 MPH in around 2.4 seconds and up to a maximum top speed of well over 240 MPH which will easily make it the fastest Audi in the World. The diesel will likely only power the rear wheels via a specifically designed gearbox which will likely be made in cooperation with Ricardo.
Audi R10 2017 Exterior
The exterior design of the car will certainly be unique and despite the fact it will share design cues with the R8, the car will offer a unique take on the hyper-car look. It will be wider, longer and shorter in height than the R8 which will also make for a more interesting design.
On top of that, it will feature a full active aerodynamic system that will be able to handle the speeds this car will be able to achieve.
Interior of the new Audi Hyper-car R10
Inside the cabin on the other hand, the 2017 Audi R10 will very likely feature a more minimalistic interior than that of the R8.
This is expected to include two carbon fiber seats and a carbon fiber dashboard, all padded in Alcantara, as well as a new MMI infotainment and control system which is going to replace all the usual buttons found on all of their other cars. A racing version with a titanium roll-cage and racing harnesses could also be released in the near future for those looking to use their diesel hyper-car on the track.
2017 Audi R10 Price and Release Date
The price will likely be more than $1 million, thus becoming the most expensive Audi ever made.
