A few years ago, if people wanted to get a car big enough for their family they usually went for an MPV which offered enough luggage and passenger space without having to sacrifice the way it handled. However, these days most people go straight to crossovers and SUVs as replacements for their family cars which is a bit unusual, especially since only a tenth of them actually plan on going off-road. In order to meet these demands, Peugeot has basically been forced to abandon their MPVs and replace most of them with compact to medium size crossovers. This time, their biggest MPV, the 5008, is going to be replaced with the 2017 Peugeot 6008, a medium size crossover which will offer seven seats in its base form.
Unlike the car it is replacing, this new model will actually be using their all new EMP2 platform which is easier to build, lighter and more rigid which should give the car superior driving characteristics.
2017 Peugeot 6008 Exterior Design
In terms of design, the 2017 Peugeot 6008 is expected to get on an entirely different route than the aging 5008 so it will likely get a more aggressive appearance with wider wheel arches and bigger wheels.
On top of that, the car could share a lot of design cues with the updated 308 such as the aggressive looking front end with the slim headlights and even a dual exhaust system in the back. Unlike the car it is replacing, the new 6008 will be slightly taller, wider and longer in order to give its passengers more space and to accommodate the new platform.
Peugeot 6008 2017 Engine
Engine wise, the new 6008 will likely get a mix of new and older engines. The base models will get a 1.6 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine which will offer 165, 205 or 270 horsepower and more than 270 lb-ft of torque while a 2 liter turbocharged diesel will also be available. The latter will offer 150, 180 or 210 horsepower and more than 300 lb-ft of torque. Both of these will come as standard with a 6 speed manual while a 6 speed automatic is going to be available as an option. Unlike the 5008 or most other cars in its price range, the 6008 will actually come as standard with an all wheel drive system.
The more interesting engine will be the 1.6 liter turbocharged hybrid which is expected to be available only in China for starters. This particular model will combine the 270 horsepower petrol engine with a 70 horsepower electric motor for a combined output of 340 horsepower and more than 340 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the other two, this will only be available with a 6 speed automatic while the rear wheels are going to be motorized by the electric unit.
Interior Design of the new Peugeot 6008
Inside the cabin, the 2017 Peugeot 6008 will be better in terms of quality and equipment than most other crossovers but the design will likely be somewhat similar to that of the upcoming 308 facelift. This means that the driver will sit quite high and the seats will be supporting and comfortable but a bit too hard.
The dashboard will be covered in leather or soft touch materials, depending on the model of choice and besides that, the car could come as standard with a sunroof as well as a triple zone automatic climate control unit.
2017 Peugeot 6008 Release Date and Price
The release date for the new model has been set for the end of 2016 which means that the production vehicle will likely be ready for production in the early 2017.
Its price has not been made available to the public just yet but it seems that the car will likely cost around 30% more than the 5008 or the C4 Grand Picasso.
