The Prius has been the best selling hybrid car in the World for nearly 10 years already and this was largely due to the fact that there were no real competitors. However, when things began to heat a bit, Toyota felt that it is time for a brand new model that is going to shook the competition and a bit more. The 2016 Toyota Prius is going to be more powerful than before, more fuel efficient as well as better looking which was the complaint to have against this car.
2016 Toyota Prius Price and Release Date
Price hasn’t been announced by there is a small possibility it will get lower. We expect around $24,000 for the base model which would be in the price range of normal sedans. The release date will also most likely be at the end of 2015 or early 2016, so there is plenty of time for things to develop further.
The engine in the new 2016 Toyota Prius hasn’t been made public yet but there are a couple of options. Firstly, there could be a 1.8 liter and an electric motor similar to the previous car but with a bit more power, at roughly 150 total horsepower. There is though a small chance for it to get a brand new 1.6 liter inline 4 with around 120 horsepower and a 30 kW electric motor for around 155 to 160 horsepower. This would get at least 50 MPG on average (or even more than that) thanks to an improved battery pack and a better design of the engine.
The transmission coupled to this engine would remain a similar CVT that will emulate a 7 speed automatic. There are also rumors of an all wheel drive Prius, but Toyota hasn’t confirmed anything just yet.
2016 Toyota Prius design will change drastically compared to the previous generation. Firstly, the front fascia will get a general makeover that will reduce the total surface in order to have a better drag coefficient. The headlights will shrink a bit but will now used LED as standard. The top grille will disappear completely while the lower intake will also get smaller. Thanks to this the car will get a LED lit front emblem which is unique on any car on the market today.
The interior on the 2016 Toyota Prius on the other hand will probably remain pretty similar to the current generation, especially when you take into account the changes Toyota made to the previous cars. The only thing that will probably change will be the removal of the tiny sunroof in order to make room for a panoramic roof. On top of that the satellite navigation system as well as the 6 speaker setup will not remain standard even on the base model.
