The current model of the Impala has been first released back in 2013 and since then it quickly became one of the better selling large sedans in its class. However, despite that the car is lacking a high performance version which is a bit of a shame when considering that some of its competitors do offer just that. In order to solve this small issue, GM is likely going to release the 2016 Chevy Impala SS in the next few months while the production model should be ready for the last part of 2016.
Platform of the new Chevy Impala SS
Unlike what most early rumors said, the new SS will not be based on a new platform but it will rather use the same platform as the current generation Impala with a few modifications to it. This should allow GM to keep costs down and it will also allow them to keep the car’s identity untouched. The problem is that the platform is a front wheel drive one which is not really meant for speed but rather for comfort and ease of use.
In order to change this, the 2016 Chevy Impala SS will most likely get a revised suspension system with harder shocks and lower springs, 19 instead of 20 inch wheels in order to be as light as possible and high performance tires. The car could also get performance brakes and even a slightly more aggressive suspension system with the help of a performance package.
2016 Chevrolet Impala Design
In terms of design, the 2016 Chevy Impala SS model will be based on the usual Impala but it will come with a few bells and whistles of its own. The front as well as the rear will get new bumpers, it will receive a splitter in the front as well as a subtle diffuser in the back while the wheels will be lightweight alloys instead of the heavy ones of the current model.
Inside the cabin on the other hand, the car will be similarly equipped to a medium-range Impala and options will add up to make a really high end car. On top of that, the seats will be new and unique to this model in order to offer better support while not being uncomfortable. A drawback is that this particular model will likely get less luggage space than usual.
Chevy Impala SS 2016 Engine
This is because the 2016 Chevy Impala SS is actually going to make use of an all wheel drive system and due to the rear differential housing, there will be less boot space. This system is required considering the new engine will be a lot more powerful than the 305 horsepower of the current top of the range mill. It is unclear for now what engine the car will get but most rumors suggest that it will receive the same 3.6 liter twin-turbocharged V6 from the ATS-V, engine which could be tuned to make up to 420 horsepower and around 400 lb-ft of torque in order to provide adequate performance without having to compromise the transmission.
The car will likely come with a newly developed 9 speed automatic which has been announced quite some time ago. This will send the power to an electronic all wheel drive system which rumors say that it will feature torque vectoring, a really neat feature on such a cheap car. The performance levels are unknown but considering the current V6, we expect the car to get from 0 to 60 MPH in under 5 seconds and up to a maximum top speed of around 155 MPH.
2016 Chevy Impala SS Price
The price for the Chevy Impala SS has not been made public just yet but considering its competition, we think that it will not cost more than $50,000, price at which it will still have to compete with cheaper and more powerful cars.
