Audi is quite familiar with super-cars but so far they did not made any hyper-cars even though they are extremely successful in quite a few types of races. Well, it seems that a new model is in the works and while it will not be the fastest of them all, it is going to be a show stopper for sure. The upcoming 2016 Audi R10 shares it name with the first diesel car to win Le Mans back in 2006. However, unlike that car which was a racing car and nothing more, the upcoming R10 is going to be a fully road worthy car which is going to feature one of the most impressive engines ever made.
2016 Audi R10 Platform
The car will likely be based on an all new platform which it will not share with any other car which is a bit unusual considering their other models. This is going to be made mostly out of carbon fiber with certain suspension parts being made out of aviation grade aluminum. The total weight will be under 3,500 pounds which is still quite heavy when compared to the McLaren P1 but that’s for a good reason.
Audi R10 2016 Exterior Design
In terms of design, the 2016 Audi R10 will likely share a lot of cues with its smaller brother, the R8. It will be longer and wider as well as shorter in height. This is to allow the car to hit high top speeds without having to sacrifice cornering performance. The front end will likely be quite short while the back will be much longer, similar to the 1990s Lamborghini Diablo.
This is because the R10 will have to house a beast of an engine under its rear deck. We don’t expect any fixed aerodynamic features but rather an all active system which will be able to handle the car at any speeds and on any roads.
Interior of the new Audi R10
The interior is likely going to be a bit more minimalistic than the one of the R8. The car will feature two racing-like seats made out of carbon fiber as well as a carbon fiber dashboard padded in Alcantara.
Most of the buttons are going to replaced with a new MMI system with a larger than usual screen which will allow Audi to keep all the functions there without having to compromise on weight.
2016 Audi Engine
The engine of the 2016 Audi R10 has to be one of the most impressive in the World because it will not follow the usual route. In fact, the R10 will be the first diesel powered hyper-car in the World and while it may not sound all that impressive, just the fact that it will be the only one makes it special. The engine powering the car is expected to be a newly developed 4.8 to 5.5 liter quad-turbocharged diesel V10 which would be able to provide all by itself up to 600 horsepower and well over 1000 lb-ft of torque.
On top of that, in order to help the car with low-speed accelerations, Audi will install a couple of electric motors on the front axle which will up the total output to more than 800 horsepower. Thanks to that, it will be able to hit 60 MPH in around 2.4 seconds and get to a maximum top speed of well over 240 MPH which will make it the fastest Audi ever made. It is unclear yet if the diesel will provide the usual quattro all wheel drive but it would not be a surprise if they only opt for the electric all wheel drive which would still be enough for such a fast car.
2016 Audi R10 Release Date and Price
The release date will likely be some time at the end of 2016 while the production model will be ready shortly after. The price will certainly be nearly $1 million, thus becoming the most expensive Audi ever made.
